Discover Marion County — Small-Town Traditions, Local Flavor & Holiday Cheer

Just a short drive inland from the Grand Strand is a part of South Carolina where historic downtowns, agriculture, community traditions and Southern hospitality are still very much a part of everyday life.

Welcome to Marion County, South Carolina.

From historic Marion to Mullins and the county's smaller communities, Marion County offers a very different lifestyle from the nearby coastal communities—and October, November and December are a wonderful time to explore it.

October — Fall, Food & Downtown Marion

October begins in Historic Downtown Marion with Late Night Shopping on Thursday, October 1, from 5–7 p.m. Local businesses extend their hours, giving residents and visitors an opportunity to shop locally while enjoying downtown.

On Saturday, October 3, the HMRA Farmer's Market returns to Main Street Commons from 10 a.m.–1 p.m.

Then it's time to talk about food!

On October 19, A Date with a Plate — Taste of Marion County takes place at The Auctioneer in Mullins from 5:30–8 p.m. The event showcases food and flavors from around Marion County and is presented through the Marion and Mullins chambers.

Fall is also a particularly nice time simply to explore historic Marion. The city promotes self-guided tours of its many historical sites, with tour information available through the Chamber and Marion County Museum.

November — Shop Local & Start the Holidays

The holiday season starts creeping into Marion County during November.

Late Night Shopping returns to Downtown Marion on November 5 from 5–7 p.m., providing another opportunity to support locally owned businesses while getting an early start on Christmas shopping.

Then head over to Mullins on Saturday, November 21, where McRae Family Farms hosts Breakfast with Pirate Santa from 9 a.m. until noon.

This isn't your ordinary visit with Santa. The event includes a pancake breakfast, treasure hunts, gifts and family activities—putting a distinctly Marion County spin on the beginning of the Christmas season.

December — Christmas in Marion County

December brings the holidays to our small towns.

In Mullins, First Sip Friday is December 4, followed the next day by the Mullins Christmas Parade on Saturday, December 5, from 4:30–6:30 p.m.

The City of Marion also has a long tradition of going all-out for Christmas. Downtown has historically featured holiday lights, shopping, carriage rides and community celebrations, along with its Christmas Parade and Tree Lighting festivities. The city's 2026 calendar hasn't yet posted the final December schedule, so those dates are worth watching as the season gets closer.

Places Worth Discovering Year-Round

One of the best ways to understand Marion County is to spend some time exploring its history.

Marion County Museum is housed in a historic former school building and tells stories of the county and its people.

Nearby, Amazing Grace Park, The Clementa Pinckney Memorial provides a beautiful community space honoring the late South Carolina Senator Clementa Pinckney.

Historic downtown also includes Marion Old Town Hall and Opera House, while Main Street Commons serves as a gathering place for community events.

For a little outdoor time, Withlacoochee Park offers recreational facilities, and the City of Marion maintains a two-mile Hike/Bike Trail in town.

Small Towns, Strong Community

Marion County doesn't have to be Myrtle Beach or Florence to be special.

Its appeal is different.

It's historic buildings and courthouse squares. It's knowing the local businesses on Main Street. It's a farmers market on Saturday morning, a community event in the afternoon, and neighbors coming together for a Christmas parade in December.

It's Marion, Mullins, Nichols and the smaller communities and rural areas in between.

And perhaps that's exactly why Marion County deserves to be discovered.
