Discover Darlington County: Racing Heritage, Small-Town Charm & Holiday Traditions

Darlington County is one of those places where South Carolina history, small-town life, arts, nature and one of the most famous names in American motorsports all come together.

From the City of Darlington and its historic Public Square to Hartsville's vibrant downtown, Kalmia Gardens, Society Hill and Lamar, there's much more to discover here than many people realize.

And October, November and December are a great time to explore.

October — Festivals, Food & Fall Fun

October gets off to a busy start in Hartsville.

On October 3, Hartsville celebrates Oktoberfest, with food, music, crafts and activities downtown. Then on October 6, National Night Out brings residents and first responders together at Burry Park for an evening focused on community.

Then it's Darlington's turn.

On Saturday, October 10, Downtown Darlington hosts the South Carolina Sweet Potato Festival.

This is no newcomer. The Greater Darlington Chamber describes it as the longest-running festival in Darlington County, attracting more than 27,000 people. The day includes crafts, children's activities, music, entertainment, a car show, food—and naturally, sweet potato pie.

Back in Hartsville, Taste of Hartsville takes place October 15, bringing together local food and community spirit.

October is also a beautiful month to visit Kalmia Gardens. On October 8, there's a free tour of the historic Thomas E. Hart House, followed on October 21 by a special lecture about Thomas Hart and the history of the property.

November — Art, Racing & Shopping Local

November gives us a chance to highlight two very different parts of Darlington County.

In Hartsville, Coker University's 54th Annual Student Juried Exhibition runs November 9 through December 11, showcasing the work of emerging artists.

Then there's something that's unmistakably Darlington.

On November 14, Darlington Raceway hosts Track Laps for Charity. It's an opportunity to experience the legendary track while supporting charitable causes.

And even when there isn't a race underway, Darlington Raceway and its Stock Car Museum are part of the county's identity. Known as “The Lady in Black” and “The Track Too Tough to Tame,” the Raceway has helped put Darlington County on the national map.

As Thanksgiving approaches, it's also a perfect time to explore the locally owned shops and restaurants in both Downtown Hartsville and Darlington.

December — Small Towns, Big Hearts

December is when Darlington County's small-town character really shines.

Darlington, Hartsville, Lamar and Society Hill each have their own community traditions, from Christmas parades and tree lightings to church programs and seasonal gatherings.

Some final 2026 dates for local December celebrations have not yet been published, so I'm deliberately leaving those dates open rather than using previous years' schedules. As December gets closer, check the local calendars for newly announced events.

But you don't need a special event to enjoy the season.

Take a walk through historic Downtown Hartsville, explore Darlington's Public Square, support a locally owned restaurant or shop, or simply enjoy one of those small-town South Carolina evenings when the streets are decorated for Christmas.

Places Worth Discovering All Year Long

Of course, Darlington County isn't just about festivals.

For racing fans, Darlington Raceway and its Stock Car Museum are must-see destinations.

For history lovers, Darlington County Historical Commission & Museum preserves the stories, records and heritage of the county.

Nature lovers have some wonderful choices, too. Williamson Park offers a beautiful cypress forest and wetland setting just blocks from Downtown Darlington, while Kalmia Gardens combines gardens, history and natural areas in Hartsville.

Hartsville also offers Prestwood Lake and Lawton Park, while the Great Pee Dee Heritage Preserve gives visitors another opportunity to experience the natural side of Darlington County.

Four Communities, One County

What I especially like about Darlington County is how different its communities can feel.

Darlington has its historic Public Square and world-famous racing heritage.

Hartsville brings together a lively downtown, Coker University, arts, restaurants, parks and gardens.

Lamar maintains the traditions of a true small South Carolina town.

And Society Hill, one of the oldest communities in the Pee Dee, gives us another glimpse into the history and heritage of this part of South Carolina.

Put them together and you have a county with a personality all its own.

You can spend one day exploring gardens and historic homes, another discovering local shops and restaurants, and another standing at a racetrack known around the world.

That's Darlington County—and it's another part of Northeast South Carolina worth discovering.
